The Northern States, namely Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal which are in the foothills of the Himalayas offer trekking, rafting and mountaineering expedition opportunities to tourists seeking adventure.

Among the popular treks in the Northern Indian state of Uttaranchal are those to Nachiketa Tal, Dodi Tal, Dayara Bugyal (bugyal, a high-altitude meadow), Sat Tal, Kedar Tal, Gangotri-Gaumukh-Nandanvan Tapovan and to Yamunotri (the source of the river Yamuna).

The major trekking areas of the Western Himalayas are Garhwal and Kumaon regions in Uttar Pradesh. The areas around Gangotri and Yamunotri have quite a good number of popular treks. Nanda Devi is another famous trekking option and most of the area comes under Kumaon region.

The Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal offer mountaineering and trekking expeditions in the Himalayas in the East India. One of the most popular of treks in Eastern India is the one through high altitude areas across the Singalila range in Darjeeling. The trek starts at Maneybhanjang (2134 m), goes to Meghma (2900 m), Toughu (3070 m), Gairibas (2621 m), Sandakphu (3636 m), and Phalut (3600m). The fourth and last day is the return trek to Darjeeling which may be taken along the along the same route or via Ramman, Rimbick and Bijanbari.

Another fascinating high altitude trek is in the Kalimpong region from Relli, Pankhasari, and Neora to the highest point in the areas, area, Rochella (3,400 m). From here it is a steady descent to Tangta, Jhalang along the foothills to Samsing. You get to see exotic varieties of Himalayan flora, bird, and wildlife along this route.
